Immacolata Concezione al Capo

The story

The church of the Immacolata Concezione was built from 1604 as the church of the Benedictine nunnery of the Capo, founded a few years earlier. Work went on through the 17th century and the decoration was completed in the 18th.

The single-nave interior is entirely lined with marmi mischi: polychrome inlays of marble and hard stones that cover walls, pillars and altars with flowers, scrolls and figures. It is one of the most complete examples in the city of this technique, typical of Sicilian baroque.

The nuns lived in strict enclosure and followed services from the grilles still visible high up. The church stands in via Porta Carini, in the heart of the Capo market, and nothing on the outside hints at what is within.

Why it is worth it

From the market you step into a box of coloured marble: red, green, yellow, black, inlaid down to the last centimetre. Not one wall is left bare. Look closely at the side altars, where the stones draw flowers and birds, then raise your eyes to the grilles from which the nuns followed Mass unseen. The silence, with the market two metres away, is part of the experience.
